What's this all about?

How does the Website get its name?

n. ser·en·dip·i·ty

  1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
  2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
  3. An instance of making such a discovery.

There's this really odd phenomenon of me taking pictures and having what I think is a promising shot turn out really bland and really bland shots turn out really good. Mallard ducks on a frozen lake.Sunrise on the beach.Very boring photo.Somebody remark that the photo of the Mallard ducks on the lake was really good, the contrast of the two loons on the frozen lake, very attractive.

That is not to say some photos turn out the way that was expected. Just that a substantial number of photos turn out better than expected. There is a wonderful photo taken by Naomi Benoit of me, which as good as a photographer that she is, I suspect the position of the reflection of the sun between my legs was just by chance.

Okay, enough about photos that work. What about photos that should have turned out but didn't? The waves were crashing in, and there was so much sight and sound, not to mention the scent of the ocean breeeze. Everything was so alive and moving. If I could capture a moment in my life, this would be one of them.

Sunrise was just moments away. We had just done 160km on our bicycle yesterday and it was a thrill to be out on Ocean City beach, to be alive and have our senses inunduated by nature. The breaking waves must make a good photo. Click. Not all things turn out. You just can't capture certain things on a camera. What you and the camera perceive are different things.

So, it is chance that sometimes makes a photograph. The serendipitous photos make for part of the joy of photography even in the digital world of today when everything can be captured. After all, what would life be if everything could be predicted? Boring.
